About the Work

Lucio Fontana's so-called "Baroque" series is characterised by an unusually expressive use of materials and brushwork, which distinguishes it from the pristine uniformity of his more famous slashed paintings. Repeatedly pierced by the artist with an ice-pick, this canvas exemplifies Fontana's early search for the dimension beyond the surface of representation. The swirling strokes of red and black paint, accompanied by clusters of glass stones enhance the cosmic dimension of what Fontana termed his "Spatialist" research.

As the art critic Enrico Crispolti wrote, "In ideal and wholly original terms, Fontana took crucial moments of the assertion of modernity, like the Baroque and Futurism as his point of reference, empathetically recognizing within them the fountainhead of the imaginative projection of his own Spatialism.
