About the Work

Eager to recreate landscapes and scenes of daily life in the Neapolitan countryside, Anton Smick Pitloo favoured outdoor work. His favorite technique is to paint on sheets of paper then mounted on canvas or cardboard, known as "canvas paper"; He mainly produced small-format works. Our oil on paper perfectly illustrates this aspect of his work.

Probably made in the vicinity of Naples, in a place that is no longer possible to identify, the artist shows us a hillside. A few houses are tiered to the right and left; In the centre, a staircase leads up to a fountain. Small characters enliven the composition and illustrate everyday life. Here we find all the vivacity of the artist, who works quickly, with a brush, in small strokes forming spots, multiplying the touches of blue, brown, green and red. Pitloo also knows how to alternate very sunny areas with shady areas. The whole constitutes an image of great freshness and spontaneity that easily evokes the beauty of the Neapolitan hinterland.
