About the Work

Mesdag commuted daily to the fishing village of Scheveningen, near his home in The Hague. There, he painted the sea and the fishermen. In this work, we see the fishermen returning from their catch.

Mesdag enjoyed capturing moments like this, when the calm is suddenly disturbed by unexpected activity. This painting is a splendid example of his work at the height of his powers. With his exceptional sense of light and colour in depicting the sky, sea, and atmosphere, along with the grey-gold and brown tones of the North Sea, Mesdag was the undisputed master of Dutch seascape painting in the late nineteenth century.
