About the Work

Painting studied by Fred G. Meijer and Nikolai Munz.

Registered on the RKD Image database under no. 346028.

A still life depicting a wooden table laden with a wide variety of confectionery and other foodstuffs, arranged in porcelain and pewter containers alongside several types of glassware.

This unpublished still life is a significant addition to the oeuvre of Osias Beert, fitting seamlessly within his early production prior to c. 1610, with multiple elements recurring in other paintings by his hand.

Two monogrammed brands on the reverse, ‘HP’ and ‘CR’, confirm its presence in the collections of Henry, Prince of Wales and later Charles I (r. 1625–1649). Remarkably, Beert’s work was recorded in St James’s Palace’s gallery in the summer 1613 during a visit of Johann Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Weimar.
