About the Work

Very large mask pendant with two horns made in 923/1000 (22.1ct) yellow gold. The original plaster was made by Max Ernst in 1959, from which a bronze mould was created by François Hugo, Aix-en-Provenance (model no. 1452), into which he hammered the almost pure gold for the round face. The two horns were cast, pinched together at their bases, and then applied to the back of the mask. This example, the second artist’s proof, was produced in 1979, as confirmed by the livre d’atelier number (2249) and the label certificate applied to the inside of the fitted wooden box that also has a vignette of the pendant on the top of the outside.

Reverse stamped 2249 (atelier no.), 1452 (model no.), FH hallmark, facsimile signature max ernst, EXEMPLAIRE D’ARTISTE 2/2.

This pendant is the artist’s proof directly from the Ernst family.

H. 19 cm; W. Max. 13.2 cm. 182g.
