About the Work

Originally conceived as a gift for former French president Raymond Poincaré on the occasion of his sixty-eighth birthday, only four large-scale vases bearing Dunand’s celebrated Japanese-style fish motif are known today. Of these, two—the example from the Greenberg collection and the present work—appear to be the finest, distinguished both by the refinement of their fish decoration and by the exceptional quality of their lacquer craftsmanship.

Provenance

Acquired through Peter Marino by Ronald Perelman around 1989

Literature

“Jean Dunand vie et œuvre” by Félix Marcilhac, Ed. du Regard 1991 p. 309 n°1029.
