About the Work

This elegant terracotta study is the work of the rare sculptor Tommaso Righi who, in the words of the scholar Vernon Minor, 'fashioned […] sculpture and stucco decorations for the richest, most powerful organisations and men in eighteenth-century Rome'. His surviving works in the Eternal City include commissions for Palazzo Chigi, the Villa Borghese, and the church of Santi Luca e Martina. Righi enjoyed a distinguished international career, relocating to Vilnius in 1784 and later to Warsaw, where he worked for King Stanisław August Poniatowski between 1790 and 1795.

The present piece demonstrates his refined command of relief modelling, revealing the fluid handling of the clay that characterises his mature style.
