About the Work

An openwork medal cast in gold with a central image of the Immaculate Conception surrounded by the inscription: /MCONCEBADSNPECADOORGNAL/ (Mary conceived without Original Sin). The jewel is beautifully enameled: at the front, the text in white and a decoration of flames in red and blue. At the back, the text in blue and the flames in red and white. The Virgin is finely chiseled, with beautiful hair and a bright blue mantle set with stars.

These medals were very popular around the 1630, specially in Seville, and although from time to time we can find examples in enameled bronze, a gold medallion of this quality is rare.
