About the Work

The large, sumptuous canvas boasts a distinguished pedigree of publications and public exhibitions that accompanied it throughout the last century. It has also passed through the hands of several knowledgeable collectors of Dutch Golden Age art, including Hans Wetzlar, whose legendary sale of his collection ranked among the most significant auction results of the 1950s.

The details are astonishing, the colors are rich and vibrant, the composition is balanced. Thus, the picture combines all the best attributes of a Van Beyeren still life and can be understood as an outstanding example of his still life art.

Against a dark brown background, a variety of objects are arranged on a table and open up a world of senses. On the left side of the painting a polished and reflective silver plate can be seen upon which two roses in full bloom are placed. The fresh pink of the blossoms is reflected in a delicate, painterly way in the round silver plate. Behind them, lying on the table, a finely ornamented shining silver drinking cup can be seen which represents the masterful silversmithing art of the 17th century in an impressive way. To the right of that, in the central axis of the image, a glassy, translucent roemer is prominently placed. Half-filled, probably with tasty white wine, and featuring bright light reflections, the glass acts as a link to the right part of the picture, which shows a bowl filled with all sorts of tasty fruits and grapes. They appear fresh, almost as if they had just been picked and are now waiting to be eaten. The bowl, with its slightly curved shape can be seen as an example of the fine craftsmanship of the silversmiths and appears equally highly polished and shiny. In front of the bowl a clock appears. The silver lid, which is folded upwards, reveals the clock mechanism and at the same time seems to make the ticking of the clock almost audible to the viewer. The bowl, as well as the clock in front of it and the peach cut in half, are draped on an oriental, richly ornamented colourful carpet that hangs down over the edge of the table.
