About the Work

The present drawing was part of a series representing the seasons. The tradition for cycles of representations of the months or the seasons became particularly popular in Flemish art of the 16th century. Thematically, the most significant precedent for the present drawing is another series of drawings executed by Hans Bol in 1570, in which each drawing represents two months, as our sheet.

In terms of composition, Joos de Momper has clearly returned to the example of Pieter Brueghel the Elder, in particular the latter’s magnificent 'Hunters in the Snow' in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. The composition of our drawing closely follows Brueghel’s example, with only few differences.
