About the Work

Nicolas de Largillière may have painted this extremely rare and sublime composition for his own chapel. The strong verticality accentuates the tension and pain that animate the carved from ivory body of Christ. The painter skilfully plays with contrasts.

The highly characteristic, angular design of the perizoma contrasts with the ecstatic expression on the face with its large eyes and the generous use of colour on the body. Against a monochrome background, the incandescent vapours on the horizon evoke a Counter-Reformation drama and accentuate the beauty of the Saviour.
