TEFAF Museum Restoration Fund recipient for Maastricht 2026: Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister

The European Fine Art Foundation (TEFAF) has announced that the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, part of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, is the recipient and partner of this year’s TEFAF Museum Restoration Fund (TMRF) in Maastricht.

Chosen by an independent international committee of conservation specialists, the project was recognised for its scholarly significance, urgency and public impact. The restoration of The Boar Hunt by Peter Paul Rubens is not simply a conservation treatment but an opportunity for research in depth. Recent technical findings suggest that parts of the composition may have been added at a later stage, raising important questions about authorship and the operation of Rubens’ studio. The project therefore combines material necessity with substantial art historical potential.

As part of TEFAF Maastricht 2026, a dedicated TMRF Talk will take place in collaboration with ICOM-CC on Saturday, March 15 at 1 pm, titled Peter PaulRubens’ The Boar Hunt: Tracing Authorship in a Wooden Panel. For more information and to sign up for the talk please go here. The session will present the research and conservation insights behind the project. The talk will be recorded and made available via the TEFAF website. The presentation and TEFAF Talks program are powered by Aon.
